Japanese Concept of Ikigai

The Japanese concept of Ikigai is a way of living that is linked to longevity. It is comprised of what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and your vocation, resulting in a joyful and fulfilling life, especially as we age.

Ikigai may already be part of your everyday life. It might be morning walks with friends before the desert heat sets in, volunteering at community events, welcoming new neighbors, organizing games, gardening, dancing, crafting, or simply being the person everyone counts on for a smile and conversation.

Retirement often gives us something truly valuable: the freedom to choose how we spend our time. While relaxing is important, many people find that staying involved and connected brings the greatest sense of fulfillment. Studies continue to show that people who maintain social connections and meaningful activities tend to feel happier, healthier, and more energized.

Volunteering is one wonderful example of Ikigai in action. Whether helping at community events, supporting local charities, serving on committees, or lending a hand to a neighbor, giving back creates connection and purpose—for both the volunteer and the people around them.

The good news is that Ikigai does not have to be something grand. Sometimes it’s as simple as having a reason to get up each morning that brings joy, connection, or meaning.

Extend your social connections this month by attending our ice cream social on Monday, June 8, or “popping” into the office on a Wednesday to greet the staff and get some popcorn. I certainly hope you will put the mini art auction on your calendar: Sunday, June 26, as a way to enjoy community art.
